Well like people here say if you have to ask then install Ubuntu. Really depends more on what you intend to do with the laptop. I recommed you to go to www.distrowatch.com and try their advanced search feature. This would help you better understand what you want to do with your laptop.
Welcome to LQ.

There are many flavors of Linux and you can try Cent OS, RHEL or Fedora which are the best ones.
You will find all drivers with OS itself and no need to worry on that.

Thanks

Backbox is a distribution from network and security experts for network and security experts. It is not meant to be run as every day desktop system.
I would recommend to install a distribution more aimed towards the Linux beginner, like Mint, PCLinuxOS or Mepis. You may also want to try Ubuntu, but keep in mind that its user interface id very different from Windows and even amongst Linux users quite controversial.

I think Linuxmint is the first choice for beginners. it has most of usual applications installed by default. I reccomend you Debian based distros, debian is more simple and user can understand it better than rpm based distroes. Opensuse and fedora are the two major rpm based distroes, but I don't reccomend them for you as a beginner.
in linux world, you cannot choose on distro for ever! you should test and test and test...

Boot to live cd's. They easily tell you how well the OS will work.
