Linux for handheld devices

Hi there I am a high school student and we are doing a project on ' Developing linux for mobile phones'. We dont hav much prior knowledge on Linux as such. What I want to know is that are there customised linux source code available which we can directly start working on and which version is best to work on ,considering that this is just a 2 month project. I currently have linux kernel 2.4 which is quite vast to edit.

So what kind of hardware do you have?? A lot of handhelds (that run Linux or not) use the ARM or MIPS architectures. Anyhow, you could have a look at Linuxdevices.com for some information on handhelds and other embedded programming.

We have not yet short listed the mobile phone for which we would customise the project. What we really need right now is a smaller version of linux kerner to start our work with. We have no hardware as this is our college project...
