Angry Linux for a compaq armada 1700

I have a compaq armada 1700 with 160MB RAM on a 266MHz Intel Processor with a ethernet network card and ess technology sound card. I have run WinXP as well as Win2K3 on it without any problems. Now I want to try Linux (who doesn't?!). I have tried installing Mandriva Linux 2005 Limited Edition only to get an error message that says somthing like "your cpu cannot support 64-bit blah..blah..". What Linux version should I use??? Pse heeelllppp!!!

There is a "Search" button at the top of this page. Why not enter "armada" in there, and see if anything comes up.

What you need is a so called "lightweight distro", a linux distribution that's meant to run on older hardware.

You might find this page interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...older_machines

@rickh, why don't you try to help? A search for "armada" doesn't bring up much useful info.

I don't know about your search, but mine brings up this current thread http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=519785
