Linux distributions freezing during install....

I hope I have the right forum here but I have a few questions. I have been trying to install the newest Ubuntu (11.xx) and Fedora onto my Toshiba Satellite L25 S-121. It has an 60gig PATA HD, 1.6ghz intel celeron with only 192 mb of RAM. I am assuming this is a hardware problem since it isn't working for any of the distributions I tried, not even Slax. I kind of just want a second opinion to make sure I am not missing anything although now that I look at it, I really am not running much memory here and I am thinking that may be the problem.

I am trying to install from a USB stick, since the cd drive is shot (its just going to be a putz around laptop) and have used LiveLinux and unetboot. It usually loads (very very slowly) until it asks me what to do with the install (with windows or over) in which point it won't load any further. Any suggestions are welcome

Have you tried a Debian Net install? Very minimal system installed, then add what you need.

Also try the Ubuntu alternate text installer.

yea I read that I should try Lubuntu for weaker systems. If that doesn't work I will give that a try!

with only 192mb of ram, most modern distros won't work. I would suggest puppy 4.3, slackware 12.1, siltaz, a basic install of debian with xorg, synaptics and light window manager, but one needs to know their way around debian. There are also a few others that should work but don't remember what they are.

Thanks for the info guys. So pretty much just buy more RAM. They have it on Amazon for like 13 bucks for 1g. that might be less of a headache

buying more ram would be better, with 1g shouldn't have trouble with whatever distro you want to use.

Do yourself a favor and just buy some more RAM. It's very affordable, and that laptop is still fast enough for basic tasks.

You can get 1Gb for $16, and it even supports up to 2GB for $32.

Good deal. Now if only hard drive prices would drop.
