Make the command
Code:
tar xvfj Downloads/all-20071007.tar.bz2 && sudo mv all-20071007/* /usr/lib/codecs/
The command now reads:
untar the file
when the untarring is complete move the files

Did you get that command line from somewhere? These are 2 different commands that you have to type separately:
Code:
tar xvfj Downloads/all-20071007.tar.bz2
sudo mv all-20071007/* /usr/lib/codecs/

thanks, that seems to had worked as got no errors just the (user@localhost -)$

but don't understand what "untar the file
when the untarring is complete move the files" means?

is it like unzipping? move the files where?

funny how the && makes it work when it was not in any of the tutorials i had found.

iam new at this really need a real beginners guide.

A tar ball is an archive, similar to a zip file. They will come as .tar, .tgz and similar. You will also see .bz2 which is also a zipped file but uses Bunzip2. To break down the command, what you did was first expand the archive (tar xvfj), then you assume temporary root powers (sudo) and told the system to move (mv) all the files from within the newly expanded archive over to /usr/lib/codecs.

I'm on the same boat...
any time i try to run: tar xvfj Downloads/all-20071007.tar.bz2 && sudo mv all-20071007/* /usr/lib/codecs/
I get:
tar: Downloads/all-20071007.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
Wath can i do???
