Life is SO SLOW with 64bit

I have a new HP Compaq 6715s (AMD twin core turion 2Ghz, 4 Gig of ram, ATI card and AMD chipsets throughout). It sits beside an Athlon XP 4-5 years old. Installing Ubuntu(latest 64bit cd) took over 4 hours. The old Athlon is streets ahead speedwise. It's running like a 286. Point,Click and wait. Is this a common experience? What's the deal? I didn't expect faster, but hell, I didn't expect much slower either! What's most irritating is that when I should have disk activity (e.g. loading firefox) there is only sporadic disk activity, and speed suffers accordingly.
