When my x100e netbook went out of warranty, I started pondering whether I wanted to do anything more with it. Windows 7 Pro always ran nicely, though it would bog down on occasion. I never thought Win7Pro was a good idea for a netbook anyway. But I needed the ability to join a domain for my job, and the portability of a netbook for troubleshooting.
I bought a 120GB SSD for it, then started browsing distros. For now, I've settled on Absolute Linux. Not bad, but a bit limited in software packages available via their package manager. I'm a Windows guy anyway; just looking to expand my horizons a bit.
I don't have a specific question, yet. But I *am* open to general comments. My two immediate tasks as I start swimming in Linux waters:
Get Chrome/Chromium installed and default. Firefox I want gone. Or at least ignored.
Get the Window Manager to Fluxbox
Let the roller coaster ride begin. Tweaking way back in Win3 got me started. Now I'm back to tweaking. Yay!
absolute linux looks nice, long maintained.
it already features fluxbox.
it seems to not have a 64bit version; not sure if that is relevant for your hardware.
Absolute has its own software repository, but seems rather limited. But that's what I wanted. I want to dig into Linux a bit. It runs smoothly so far, though. I may need to try to find a better UI for apt-get.
I've heard of Mepis. I'll have to look at that. Thank you, beachboy2.
I'm noticing that, veerain. It's strange, because Absolute's tutorials presume that Chrome is the default browser. But I can't even locate it, much less being the default. And it (Chrome/Chromium) isn't an option in the Internet options.
Oh well. Since this is for exploring more than for a particular project, maybe I'll try M14 or another distro. I really like Bodhi, but it has an even smaller package repository. Including no LibreOffice. I have too many MS Office docs to not use Libre.
