laptop vga output to crt monitor

hi , I have dell inspiron 1400 laptop whose LCD screen got cracked partially.
So I connected laptop's VGA female connector to cable from CRT .
CRT works well with graphic card of my desktop PC but in this case I do not see laptop screen on CRT.
I hoped , it will duplicate view of Laptop LCD .
Where am I wrong ?
Also note that on detaching CRT cable to laptop I get 'no signal' on CRT which means that previously laptop must have been sending it signals.

Turns out . This info , I got from xrandr.
That is the problem of windows 8 which used unmodifiable 64Hz refresh rate while my plain old CRT has 60 , 75.
When I booted from backtrack 5 live USB the display appeared on laptop as well as CRT.
Also , this distro did not have arandr though it can be installed via repository.
