Laptop Touchpad Sooo Slow?

For some reason or another, the touchpad on my laptop is moving incredibly slowly, and I cannot seem to find a way to speed it up. I am running Debian Etch, with kernel 2.6.12. I played around with my xorg.conf following a tutorial instructing me to install Synaptic drivers (I did successfully do so), and reconfigure my xorg.conf file (I'm not sure if I did this right). Still though, it is moving as slow as ever. Does anyone have any other ideas? I am working on a Dell 600m.
Thanks for any help.

Gnome is my GUI. The first thing I checked upon the discovery of this problem was the Gnome mouse configuration utility. That worked great for adjusting the speed of my USB mouse, but did nothing for my touchpad.

ok is that the same prog as 'gnome-mouse-properties' ?

have you tried another manager (ie kde, etc)

was it ok during installation?

if so maybe you can look at the settings while it is installing and jot them down.

i wish i knew more about this..
