laptop touchpad ok, USB mouse quits working HP Pavillion zt1195 Debian Sarge

x-post to Hardware yesterday, no replies
Unexplained USB mouse freeze up on Sarge... laptop touchpad not affected... the damn USB mouse just quits working out of the blue. Unplug and replug fixes it until next lockup.

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "usbmouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
Option "Buttons" "7"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "6 7"
EndSection

Mouse just did it navigating KDE's menus to load kedit.
The USB mouse is a generic 7 button and the above x86config entry was from a google search that had a jpg of my exact mouse.

running kernel 2.6.8-2-386
Debian "Sarge" fresh install today (network)

You could try changing the XF86Config entries to
Code:
Section "InputDevice"
     Identifier "Configured Mouse"
     Driver "mouse"
     Option "CorePointer"
     Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
     Option "Protocol" "auto"
     Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
     Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
     Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
     Identifier "usbmouse"
     Driver "mouse"
     Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
     Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
     Option "Buttons" "7"
     Option "ZAxisMapping" "6 7"
     Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
EndSection
If this has no effect, then you could a) try disabling gpm (apt-get remove) and/or b) disabling legacy usb support in the bios.

Cheers,

mj

what kernel are you using? There were some lame problems with early 2.6 kernels that would not load usb... I had users crying at me till I upgraded the kernel.
