Laptop Split Screen Problems after Display Suspends
 

Hi,

If I leave my computer idle for ~5 minutes, the display will turn off (however I believe the computer is still active). When I come back from being idle, I can see the screen, however the top 35% of the screen is at the bottom, and the other 65% of the screen is at the top. It's completely split! Everything works fine, but I have no way of getting this back to normal without rebooting.

I've tried disabling all of the power management options in the BIOS however that does not correct the problem.

I've had this problem under Redhad Linux and Gentoo Linux, but I never had the problem under Windows XP. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 8200 btw. If anyone could help me out with this, it would cure many headaches. Thanks!

I have a similar problem but it happens when I try to play a game.

What type of video card is in your laptop?

I had this problem before.

Try updating the BIOS to the latest release from Dell.

I have a Dell Latitude C600 and it works great after the BIOS update.

I'm having the same problem on my Inspiron 8100 laptop. As soon the machine
goes into suspend mode or sleeps, the screen splits. I updated to the latest and greatest
BIOS from Dell but still have the same problem.

Any other suggestions on why this happens?

One way to fix the screen if this happens is to go into a new console (pure text window) by hitting control-alt-F6. Once the console window opens, go back to X usining control-alt-F7.
Like I said, it works for me but isn't a long-term fix.

just to comment i have the same problems w/ my dell inspiron 8100, i have updated to the latest nvidia video driver, latest BIOS and have configured my apci so it doesnt freeze up when i unplug my laptop. So i dont know if this a dell specfic problem or not. As of right now what i have to do is kill the x server by ctrl+alt+backspace then restart x. A short term fix for now but im looking for help elsewhere so if i find anything ill post back

It's not Dell specific. I have this same problem with my Toshiba laptop. It's one of the things that has been keeping me away from going with Linux full time on my laptop. So I continue to dual boot and Linux rarely gets booting into.

have you tried to download the latest versio of Xfree? I had some problems on my DELL Latitude, but the new version of Xfree fixed it. BTW I have a Neomagic video card. Good luck

I have same split screen problem after idle wake up, toshiba 2410, nvidia geforce4, I have log on again to get screen back to normal.

This is the least of my worries, I have been struggling with my win-modem for three days, I could steal the pcmcia modem from my wife's laptop, but she might figure that out pretty quick.
If I knew that toshiba used those modems, I definately would not have bought it, I have always had problems with those modems even in desktop units, they do not like normal fax machines.

I got the split screen fixed, I have a toshiba 2410, with a nvidia geforce, I changed the bios settings for power, and screen wake on lan, I also finally got the nvidia driver settings done right in x86config. I am sure that the nvidia settings were the real problem.

For some reason, I cannot enable the 3d, but I do not want to experiment with it anymore at this time, at least until I get the modem working.
