Laptop, Kernel 2.6.5, and ACPI
 

Hey guys,

I've recompiled kernel 2.6.5 and included ACPI in order to monitor power of my laptop; however, I've noticed that my fan runs much more frequently in linux than in windows when dealing with power management.

Obviously, the amount of power or processor usage is not being regulated as in windows since the fan is needed to cool the system more frequently.

Are there any programs that I should be aware of to control settings such as this?

i have the same problem!may be we can share some information.

Do you use reiserfs? It consumes a lot of cpu resources - if the processor has to work harder, it will run hotter. Try XFS or JFS if you are really concerned about it. (XFS is great for laptops btw, since it uses delayed allocation - In other words, your hard drive won't spin up as often, which saves power & it also prevents fragmentation).

Try "cpufreqd" or "cpudyn". These monitor the load on the machine,
and adjust the cpu settings accordingly.
