laptop from scratch help

once i manage so save up some money for another computer i'm planning on getting a laptop and this time running linux only... primarily to be used for internet and word-processing kinds of things, perhaps a little multimedia.

right now i'm doing an xp/slack dual boot on my desktop, so i'm not very experienced with laptops at all. i obviously don't want to pay for a computer pre-loaded with any other os. basically i want an ethernet card, hard drive, floppy drive, cdr... i don't know what all can fit in one of those, but my question is... where should i get it? what should i get? build it from scratch? buy one from wal-mart? i don't know.

I like the Dell 8xxxx since the videocards can be upgraded and they have dual battery capability w/out removing the CD drive. Find a used 1gig or higher on eBay

one vendor i have used in the past is

www.americancomputech.com

there you can build your own laptop, customizing everything. click "notebooks", choose your chip, etc, then choose the notebook configurator. this vendor has great costomer service i found, and have pretty competative pricing.

I second that motion. Get one with a *fixed* dvd-rom or combo drive if you plan on watching dvd movies (you'll likely need both batteries and it's a pain to switch them if your dvd is in the modular bay, believe me).
