Laptop Battery Usage Optimization

Hi,
I am using HP ProBook 6550b which is company laptop and running windows 7 now. I have installed a few different distributions such as Mint, Ubuntu etc. But I could not manage to reach the time on battery of windows 7.

I would like to install linux on my laptop but battery usage is very important. I run on battery most of the time.

Is there any tips or trick to maximize the time when running on battery?

Most distros nowadays come with laptop-mode-tools pre-installed. You have to activate it using the tools for your distribution and then configure it using the files in /etc/laptop-mode, especially laptop-mode.conf.
This way you can fine-tune the power-saving behavior of the laptop to get a better battery live.
I would also recommend to use a more lightweight desktop environment, that also may save some power.
