Knoppix 3.3 HD Install Error Message
Compaq Armada 7360DMT
Pentium MMX 200mhz 4 gig HD, Aurora64V+ 2 meg video 32meg RAM Hey all! I decided to install Knoppix 3.3 on the HD for my old hand-me-down laptop so I can run a light Fluxbox for just AIM chatting, surfing the net, and jamming to mp3s. No bloated KDE or anything. Installation runs like a charm...take out cd and reboot. It loads, then gets hung up on a lot of errors and into a never ending cycle: modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module binfmt-474c /sbin/getty: /sbin/getty: cannot execute binary file INIT: Id "3 (and 4,5,6)" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes modprobe: Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.4.22-xfs/modules.dep What the heck does this all mean? Any suggestions??? Thanks! Troy |
did u have any other install there?
did u cfdisk everything? when booting knoppix at the prompt try knoppix dma noscsi or f2 for more options |
Nope...no other install was there. I used the cfdisk that Knoppix provides to create the partitions. When I run Knoppix on the laptop as a live-cd, it runs/boots fine (albeit slow) with "boot: knoppix lang=us desktop=fluxbox". Any other suggestions?
Thanks! Troy |
try this at boot
knoppix dma noscsi lang=us 2 the 2 will make it boot with no X saving u some precious memory then cd /usr/local/bin sh knx-hdinstall or ./knx-hdinstall cfdisk everything dont forget that after create the partition write the table before quiting oh and if it allows u choose the optimize option or something like that. accept all the defaults and don't erase the knoppix user. create a new one and look at knoppix permissions and apply to the new user. and make this user part of the same user group that knoppix belong to. |
Still didn't work :( That was pretty much the way I had installed it before as well. This is driving me nuts! I mean, the install in runlevel 2 is flawless...the problems only arise when it goes to boot from the hard disk the first time. I may try to install it on another machine JUST to make sure the cd isn't bad or anything. I assume it isn't since it runs off the live-cd just fine. I know the hard drive is good, b/c I've run winblowz on it before. Arrggghhh! Any more suggestions? Anyone?

just noticed this in your first post:
modprobe: Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.4.22-xfs/modules.dep seems it is using the kernel vmlinuz-2.4.22-xfs. Do you have any other kernel in /boot (e.g. plain vmlinuz-2.4.22)? If you do, you should try using it. If I remeber correctly, Knoppix uses lilo so you should edit /etc/lilo.conf to add an entry for another kernel and run /sbin/lilo which you should be able to do by running Knoppix from CD. |
Try knoppix testcd just to make sure you do not have a bad CD. If you have a new enough version I believe the early september versions and on you can use the new knoppix-installer and install in Knoppix mode instead of Debian and it will be the same as if you are still running of the CD except you boot from the HD. You may also want to check the forum at Knoppix.net the is plenty of information there to check out.
