knetworkmanager on Dell Inspiron 4000 does not work

I have opensuse 10.2 on a Dell Inspiron 4000 running using a wireless lan pcmcia card. Besides the fact that on every boot eth1 is renamed to eth-something and counts up every boot time (currently at eth125) the new knetworkmanager does not work.
Is there a trick to get it working?
