Just Migrated from Windows to Linux Red Hat 9 and need help

Ok I am a complet newbie to linux and need help with many things. I have read through about 30 tutorials on most things from copying files to installing. But here are two big problems I just cant seem to get around. Number one is I am working on a Fujitsu FMV Biblio NB50G laptop. I have an extra wide TFT screen. My x windows does not have the right drivers to allow me to use the whole screen and it bugs me to be looking at such a small display. Next and probably something that has taken me the better part of 2 days trying to figure out is installing a video dvd player on my machine. I downloaded a couple of different ones and I cant seem to get any of them to work. The one i have gotten the most progress with is Real Player 8 which i got to the point of making a -s connection to the .so file in the mozilla directory. but i cant get it to run Another tutorial told me i need to copy a file from a zip file in the real player 8 directory and i have found it but i cant seem to make the files extract into the mozilla plugins directory. I would like to know if there would be someone who can help me out and maybe become my Guru. I will read what you tell me to read in order to advance my knowledge and understanding of Linux. I have no plans of heading back into windows. If i have to I will wade through this at a slow pace but I am here to ask for help. I am in Japan and have not found a book in English which i can browse through while I learn this so I would also like to know what book is best for me which i can buy from Amazon.com or something close to that. I am a complete newbie to linux and I am learning as I go. Please let me know.

I got the screen fixed. Any help on the DVD would be great. I am in Japan and the only help group TLUG Tokyo Linux User Group have yet to reply to me. So I need some help here since i am on an island alone with only this forum to get help. If I bug because I am just to much of a newbie let me know about other forums where newbies can get more help.
thankyou

I got Xine to work on my laptop fine but I cant get MPlayer9 to work on it. Anyways decided since I got Xine to work I would go with that for a bit while I get more used to setting stuff up in Linux. One problem my DVD-rw is not recognized as that it is just labeled as CD i need a way to get dev/dvd in to my root. Are there any links which would take me to a place where I can learn about doing this. THanks
