Is possible to install Linux (Ubuntu 9.10) in a HP pavilion dv2029ea?
 

Hi All,

I read Ubuntu has improved and want to change from Windows XP to Ubuntu. I do not know much about Linux but want to learn. I have a HP pavilion dv2029ea and I have been looking for drivers before I install Ubunto but I can not find them, are they available somewhere? if not, is it still possible to install Ubuntu?

The 'drivers' are in the installation DVD, along with the operating system, etc. You should just have to burn the ubuntu image to a CD/DVD, boot from it, and follow the instructions.

I express bad my question. I have the drivers for the HP pavilion dv2029ea for Windows but not for Linux (Ubuntu or other versions), are they available somewhere?

Again....the 'drivers' are ON THE UBUNTU INSTALLATION DISC. When you install Ubuntu, the necessary 'drivers' will be loaded/installed.

You can search for your model of laptop and if you don't find it, perhaps a similar model will be helpful. Unfortunately, not all of these links are still valid.

My advice is to just go for it and if something doesn't work, check the forums. That's what I did with my laptop, took some time, but I'm please I stuck it out.

When you will install ubuntu 9.10 all the sound, graphics and other general drivers will be installed whit it.
You will only have to search drivers for others, for suppose you have a graphic card nvidia or something. These drivrs are available in debian package just have to search acoording to the hardware series.

You will learn about other dependencies after installation.
If you still face any problem. Ask it.

I actually really want to try Linux but I see so many problems being brought up in the forums, mostly in relation to drivers, that scare me a little. However I want to make the change.

I do not know much about computers and very little about Linux. I get lost when you talk about debian and similar terms. Maybe you can recommend me some nice sites where to get the basic knowledge.

This one is broken up into chapters, so you can just jump to something you may have a specific question about. It works with the Debian distro, but if you're going to use Ubuntu, that'll be just fine as Ubuntu is built around the Debian distro, so there won't be much that's different.

This has nice video lessons. Again, just pick the topic you want and go from there. It lets you chose either quicktime or flash.

First of all, thank all of you for the support and encouragement to jump to Linux.

I am incredibly happy with Ubuntu, its another world! All goes so smoothly even though I run many programs at the same time, just amazing. I am now discovering all the new opportunities and advantages it has.

I installed it yesterday in my HP pavilion dv2029ea and all worked well. I just could not try the webcam but simply because I did not know how. However, msn window did not give the possibility to start a video and the person I was chatting with indicated me that I appear as if I had no webcam. I hope to find it out by my own, if not you will have me back here ;) (Thanks again! :hattip:).

If you want to use webcam try cheese, its a good utility.
