Is one GPS better than another?
 

I'm looking to get a GPS for Vehicle Navigation, and I'm wondering if there is 1 type/brand/model better than another?

I can go 2 ways I suppose, get a Standalone type with screen on it and software, or I can get a USB type and install my choice of software. But can I get a standalone type, and connect it to a computer to use it's GPS, but the computers software?

I'm also wondering if there are any particular USB units that work better with linux than others. I see that even the Microsoft GPS-360 is working in Linux, so I am getting the feeling that pretty much any of them will work; is that true?

Just my .02 cents worth.... I would say that pretty much all of them will work if they support the NMEA-0183 protocol. Of the linux apps I've looked at they all support NMEA. Being a pilot I've only played with standalone built in screen type units and I like Garmin the best.

Excellent, thank you! I let this hang for a while to see if anyone had anything else to add. I guess I'll just go for it based off the possibility that they all probably will work, and the fact that I emailed one of the companies I'm looking at getting one from and they flat out told me they add driver support to the kernel and have since 2.4.16 or so. So it sounds like a company I'm ok with supporting! If I get it and things go well, I'll report back to let everyone know if it's worth the $$ and time.
