Invalid mount option when attempting to mount the volume Dell x300

I am new to Linux and installed 8.04 from a flash drive about a month ago. Since I installed Heron when I put anything into the USB ports, the system recognizes what it is but I keep getting Invalid mount option when attempting to mount the volume. I can't get anything to work even after I upgraded to 8.10 it still has the same error. I have a Dell x300 with the docking station and when I tried to install Heron originally, it wouldn't let me do it from the live disk. Can someone please help me I want to stick with Linux but I need my USB ports to work. Thanks ahead of time.
