installling linux on compaq nx7010
 

I have a compaq 7010 laptop with centrino 1.6Ghz, and 512 M. It has only one hard disk and the disk is partitioned as a single partition, which is formatted as NTFS file system. The OS installed in Windows XP. This laptop is equipped with wireless0LAN, blue tooth, an infraa red port, fire wire, etc. I am thinking of installing linux in addition to existing XP. I have never installed a linux earlier on a laptop. Can any one answer a few points
1. Will the fips utility work fine for resizing of existing NTFS partition.
2. Can anyone tell me whether linux will let me have full functionality.

Any additional useful information will also be welcome.

To answer you, you may encounter some problem and may not have full functionnality. I've got hp nx9110, I installed Debian 2.6.8 and
I hava some troubles to have sound (still doesn't work), I haven't try to make my wireless connection work yet, but I think you'll succeed in installing graphic car :)

but am not sure whether it will work in a laptop. Is there anyone who can give some definitive answer.

I had the same situation with a compaq nc8000. What you need to do is create a linux boot disk, then run the ntfsresize program to "shrink" your existing windows partition. You can create a linux CD by downloading knoppix:

Hello everybody,

I have successfully resized the NTFS partition, and installed the linux (fedora 1).
But there are some unresolved issues - I find that ACPI is not working.
1. The service is already enabled (by chkconfig). But there is no file in /proc which may indicate that ACPI is running.
2. When I go though MainMenu-> System setting - > server setting -> services and restart the service acpid, it says the service started successfully, but there is no pid corresponding to this service. (Confirned though ps -ale also).
3. When I give command acpi -V, the system says "command not found". I checked in /sbin, /usr/sbin also.
4. I also find that there is no file in /etc/acpi/actions. And there is only one sample file in /etc/acpi/events.


In such a scenario, naturally - /proc/acpi/battery/BATO/info - also is not there.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hello everybody,

The Fodora 3 works okay on this laptop. The ACPI also correctly displays the battery status. Some tweaking has to be done with the xorg.conf file to improve the resolution of the display from the 800x600.
I have to yet check out the blue tooth and infra red ports. Can anyone throw some light on how to go about testing these features ?
