Installing Ubuntu on HP G60235DX

Hi everyone, been a long time since i posted on here and been a long time since i regularly ran linux or unix so i am VERY rusty and in need to start over again. Windows 7 crashed on my laptop i use for work( 0x0000007B Error) and i am looking to run ubuntu netbook. I used sysrescd to erase all the partitions from my hard drive so it is completely clean at the moment. I tried running ubuntu netbook using the usb install method ( i used universal usb installer) i tried it on my imitation 1 gig usb stick and my cruzer 4 gig usb stick and i get this same error message:

Quote:

(process: 335): GLib - warning ** getpwid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0) [7.762111] Btrfs loaded

[7.768113] xor :automatically using best checksumming function: pIII_sse
Any help would be gladly appreciated.

Nikon you have a corrupt package on your thumb drive. Glib is GNU library and maybe apart of GlibC your C compiler.
I would suggest you use Unetbootin hereAnd avoid using the sandisk thumbdrive at all costs.
San disk has firm ware install that interferes with installers. An I also suggest you make you format your thumbdirve to fat32.
Let me know how you get along.

Hi Beanhead, thanks for the quick answer. I tried again a few times with the imitation usb stick which i have formatted to fat32 and unetbootin ,i still get half of the error message i had previously gotten before.

Just a shot in the dark, so don't mind me if stupid response.

Have you checked device permissions?
Ruled that out, in theis post it says overlapping messages & glib c unrelated to actual problem
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/531027
It says remove quiet splash option.

N|k0N 04-23-2011 01:01 AM

How would i go about checking the device permissions? I will try removing the quiet splash option and see what happens.

This 1 looks like the server version.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootParameters
I think in the other link it says press esc to get the options.

After seeing that the usb install method was not working, i decided to go back and burn a copy of ubuntu. After doing that i noticed that error doesnt pop up anymore, i tried removing quiet splash-- option and i am going down the list of boot parameters in the boot option line as i type this. What i am realizing now is that the first error that pops up every time is
Quote:

/init/: line 7: cant open /dev/sdb: No medium found
then afterwards i get a lot of SQUASHFS errors and Segmentation faults, too many to write and post here. What i am wondering is, since it seem ubuntu cannot find my hard drive, is there a way to type it in manually in the boot options?

Try using cdburnerxp set at default iso burner.
Every iso that gets downloaded will be highlighted as an iso.
Open cdbxp and select burn iso
search for iso and burn.

Thanks for all the quick replies EDDY1, i am starting to believe this maybe my original problem:

Quote:

I had this bug on one my computers, even when I formated the hard drive and tried to reinstall Ubuntu the same error came up "GLIB WARNING ** GLib - getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id" no mater what edition of Ubuntu I tried to installed I stilled had the same error. Which mean its not from Ubuntu. I then formated the hard Drive using XP home edition and started installation and it came up with read error, That reminded me about a computer I had with a Virus in the BIOS which wouldn't let me install any operating system, The only way I could get rid of the virus was to pull the CMOS battery and left it for a couple of days. I tried Installing Ubuntu with out the CMOS it work with no error. I now have a working computer.

I think the "GLIB WARNING ** GLib - getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id" is how Ubuntu reacts with the Virus.
I got tired or trying to install Ubuntu by usb and by CD so i decided to see if another distro might work and burned off a old favorite i used to run years back, FreeBSD. To make a long story short, FreeBSD could not find my hard drive either. I opened the back of my laptop to make sure it was connected correctly, took it off and attached it again just to be sure. Whenever i tried installing Windows XP or Windows 7 i get the same error i originally posted when i made this thread, so i am really starting to believe it is not Ubuntu since Windows 7 crashed so abruptly one day. Going to give that option a try that i got from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/531027 maybe i might get lucky.

Try installing debian squeeze it doesn't use as many resources to get booted. Some of my machines have a tough time getting past the 4 blinking dots.
Squeeze runs quite well.
If you do just select Advanced Options>>Expert Mode
still a graphical environment.
There's also a section that has 2 lines
secuity-updates
and volatile
unmark volatile.

Thank you for all your help EDDY1. It just seems there is something going on with this hard drive in this laptop or there is something hardware wise i am overlooking because i cannot seem to install any OS on this laptop at all. Windows gives me the error message when i first posted this thread and all versions of linux i have tried, give me the glibc error message including debian squeeze and FreeBSD. This is really frustrating. I guess i am going to have to look back at the beginning of the problem and figure out what that windows error was and see if it has something to do with the problems i am having now.

Just wanted to see if anyone had any more ideas for me to try, since i am still sitting here frustrated with this laptop sitting in front of me that i cannot use...

Do you have a hard drive enclosure?
Take hdd out, put in enclosure install OS during installation it asks if you want to "targeted" or "all", select "all"
it'll load allthe drivers then you can put in laptop.

I never asked what failed on Wins7?

N|k0N 05-02-2011 01:43 AM

Pretty much i powered on my laptop one morning and it gave me the 0x0000007B Error, looking it up online basically told me it means inaccessible_boot_device. So i reseated my RAM and checked the connection of the hard drive, took it out and put it back and it and even reset my CMOS just to see if anything would work. From looking around the hp forums, seems a few people had a problem with the hard drive in this laptop failing. It seems like these SATA drives are a pain

N|k0N 05-05-2011 08:39 PM

I just bought another Hard drive off amazon thinking maybe that might have solved my problem. Now i get other error messages instead of the ones i got before. I dont understand what is going on with this laptop and it is driving me crazy. I was thinking about buying new RAM also, but i do not want to waste the money....
