Installing S3 Savage IX driver for xfree86?

My X-server has major display problems - cuts the screen into vertical strips, etc. I think it's because the default "savage" driver (from the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 choices) doesn't work right with my actual card, S3 SavageIX. Also, the S3 Savage 3d and Savage 4 drivers are listed in the xf86config database, but SavageIX isn't. Where do I get the correct driver, and once I've got it, what do I do with it to make it show up on said lists?

Thanks a bunch.

Same problem here... can't seem to locate a Savage IX driver.... stuck with vesa for now, which really sucks for DVD playback.

NOTE: I've just installed mdk 10 over my old mdk 9.2... with mdk 9.2 (I don't know what versions of XFree that came with) I found a configuration using the avaiable drivers that worked nicely with my IX/C SDR card. However, my dumb self didn't write it down. Now with Mdk 10 and XFree4.3.0? I can't seem to find a working configuration

Oh yeah, and I know the XFree "savage" driver is supposed to support IX chips, but when I got to test it (via the test option in harddrake's graphical config thingy, not by restarting X), it only gives me the cursor, and not the pretty lines of background color that it should. I suppose I could restart X with the savage driver and see what happens. Actually wait, I think I did that, and that didn't work, :-( ... I got a big fat error message from the X server. So poo. Anywho, vesa's putting along for now.

rdsmith, give the Xfree savage driver a try, it's supposed to support IX chips, although it didn't work for me, it might for you.
