Installing Linux on Thinkpad 240 No CD drive boot

Hello,

I have an old Thinkpad 240 that I would like to use again. (It was the original netbook :-) )

The problem is it will not boot from anything but the floppy or the HD. In the past I have used a floppy boot and installed from a SCSI cd drive.

There is an old version of Fedora that is on the machine, but it is not working well. I could try copying an iso onto a partition on the drive, and then install that way, but I am not sure which install kernel files to use. I looked for one for Debian, and could not find it.

Or I could do the boot floppy routine, if any reasonable distro still supports it.

Any help or advice appreciated.

Ken

you have network access on your current system? If so then something like the following should work:

If you have a usb handy or even floppy, you can use Plop bootmanager to boot usb,usb-cdrom, cd's, etc
on computers that wont boot from usb too

My Toshiba 70000CT has no cd drive, only 1 floppy and 1 usb port
and cant boot from usb
I made a floppy of plop bootmanager's install-to-mbr bootmanager (plpbtin.img)
and also made a floppy of plops no-install bootmanager (plpbt.img)

I had to use the install-to-mbr floppy, which uninstalls and which grub/lilo will overwrite
when you install a distro

it works good and is how I install any distro to it.

I have the no-install-to-mbr plop plpbt executable included with every iso I make
and also netbootcd-3.1.2 which can net-install any major distro

get the complete plop bootmanager kit here
http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager.html

get any of my customized livecd/usb's here

I'll have to try

I'll have to try some of these ideas, but I would still like to find a disro that uses a boot floppy.

You can try Debian:

Floppy images from:
http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dis...images/floppy/

I did it some years ago and it works.

Good luck!

And you can most likely make a boot floppy for almost any distro
