Installing Linux on eeePC-901: freezes and weird messages

Hi folks,

I'd need some help.

A friend of mine has been trying to install Linux on a perfectly working eeePC-901 recently, via a dvd disk, and hasn't succeeded yet.
He tried different distros.
With some of them the computer freezed during the installation program. With others the program came up with error messages of which I couldn't find the cause.

With KUbuntu/XUbuntu the error message is something like this:
Quote:
SQUASHFS error: sb_bread failed reading block 0x*****
SQUASHFS error: Unable to read fragment cache block [******]
....
(****** are mine)

With Puppy Linux he gets a kernel panic message:
Quote:
performing a 'switch_root' to the layered filesystem...kernel panic - not syncin g: attempted to kill init!
He used only live distros, so I told him to try ``straight'' ones in the meanwhile.

Any suggestion?

thank you in advance,

Hamtavs

hope you get it sorted and post the answer here, because ive just bought my 901 and have had one half cocked attempt at getting fedora 10 on to a usb stick and install that way.

But the local library's smart filter just wont let me do a great deal, but usb is probally the best way and fedora and ubuntu have neat little well developed systems of doing it.

as long as you have admin privilages on the computer you are using to put the iso image on to the usb.

pretty sure the linux format magazine did a good article on it couple months ago.
im starting my blog on here on my experiences with the 901 and linux it might be funny

good luck
