Installing Linux on E-machine M6805?

I recently tried installing Mandriva 2005 LE (Mandriva-Linux-2005-Limited-Edition-Download-DVD.i586.iso) on my Laptop, but the installation would freeze right after I hit enter to "install/upgrade". I downloaded the i586 version of Mandriva, which in hindsight seems like the wrong one, should I have downloaded the x86-64 one? I've only been using my AMD 64 processor in a 32 bit environment (XP home) because I can't get 64 bit drivers for my videocard.

So after not being able to get Mandriva working, I found this site and in the sticky by finegan I found a link to someone who put Ubuntu on their Laptop and decided to download that distribution of linux.

So my questions are:

1. Did I download the wrong version of Mandriva for my laptop?

and

2. If knows of a good step by step tutoriel for puttin Ubuntu 5.04 on an E- machines M6805.

Oh, and I should point out that i'de like to keep XP on my laptop as well, do I need to create a new partition for Linux or will the distribution come with it's own partitioning tool in the install?

Also , if you have any tips or suggestions i'de be glad to hear them.

Yes. You need the x68 one.

In the guide. You can keep XP. It's called dual-boot.
