installation problems on gericom notebook


i've a brand new notebook gericom (hummer series celeron m 1,4ghz, 256 ram). the default os is mdk 10.1 so i get it quite relaxed about the hw compatibility with linux as soon as i try to install my favcorite distros (debian sarge and fc2) different problems arise.
1- fc2 don't even starts. just after the boot of vmlinuz the sistem crash. the last lines printed before the crash are:

nothing else to do but shutdown the notebook with power button.
2- debian sarge with kernel 2.4 seem better since i can install at least the base system, but after the reboot, before i can complete the installation choosing packages and so on, the system crash. the last line is:
insmod: no such device
3- debian sarge with kernel 2.6 allows me a few step further. base system installation is ok, after the reboot i can configure the root pswd, create my user account, configure ppp, but i can select and install all the other packages. so all i can have i a very basic sys without X and whatever.
i'm really frustrated. please help

reading around i understood that the issue could be related to the former step i.e. configuring apt that is not ofeereing me other option than choose the cdrom as installation madia but no more.
still not understanding.
