Installation problems

I purchased a laptop and a desktop very recently. My laptop is toshiba satellite and desktop is emachines. I have been trying to install fedora and mandriva on different occasions but the installations stopped at the very beginning with some flickering in the monitor. How can I solve this problem?

Which versions of Mandriva and Fedora did you try to install? And via what method?

It may be easier to start with the desktop, so what is the hardware in it, or does it have a model number?

Hi Danny. Thanks for such a nice quick reply. I purchased emachines T3508 desktop and it has celeron 3.33 GHz processor, Ati radeon xpress 200 graphics and built in sound card and 512 DDR memory. My laptop is Toshiba satellite a-105. I tried Redhat 7.2, fedora core 5 and mandriva 10 (I believe)and when I start my pc after loading the installation cd, the installation starts with hardware probing and then it freezes. If you could give me any idea how to solve this, that'd be great.
