I bought the FUJITSU SIEMENS AMILO M1437G two weeks ago and I am still unable to install Linux on it. People at FUJITSU SIEMENS customer service in Belgium told me : "This computer is sold with Windows XP so...". I am still looking for any solution. It might be related to the SATA drive. One bad point is that I am not even able to change anything related to SATA support in the BIOS. The Linux drivers of the Discrete Serial ATA RAID controllers VT6420/1 for Linux are available at Via website, but as a newbie I don't know if it possible to create an installation cd with this driver. Can anyone help me ? Thanks.

I have installed SuSE 9.1 on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo M1451G. Initially it worked but I was unable to take advantage of the 1280x800 resolution and the ATI graphics card.

When I played around with the monitor configuration, first I got the notorious "Kernel Panic message" and I reinstalled Linux. When I tried to change the monitor and graphics card configuration, I got a black screen as a result. I changed the monitor settings with Sax2 (using an external monitor to be able to see what I was doing).

Looks OK now but cannot match the resolution I was getting with XP. Anyone has an idea of how to configure for a widescreen monitor WXGA (1280x800) and the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics card?

Ideas much appreciated.

Open your /etc/X11/xorg.conf or /etc/X11/XF86Config and replace

In the "Display" SubSection of the "Screen" section, I changed the Modes line to be:

Modes "1680x1050" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1280x800" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

see for example:

Amilo M1473G - suse 9.3

While getting the first menu during the installation of the Suse 9.3, the keyboard is not responding at all ... so after a few seconds xp is coming up. Fortunatelly I could find on this forum the way to go around this problem (LinuxQuestions.org > Forums > Linux - Distributions > Suse/Novell > Suse 9.3 and Amilo from tuco) and now it's doing fine. Thanks to all.

Hi Laurent,

I struggled for weeks and finally it works (although there are still some issues tosolve).

I've installed fedora core 4: (2.6.11-1.1369_FC4) .
I 've downloaded the ISO images and used CD's install.

During startup, I've used the options :
pci = noacpi acpi=off (this to avoid the kernel panic)

The install succeeded.

The next problem was setting the display .
I first downloaded fglrx_6_8_0-8.16.20-1.i386.rpm and ati-driver-installer-8.16.20-i386.run
and installed the driver.

running fglrxconfig changed my xorg.conf file, but it was not working properly.
I found after quite some surfing the following configuration to work (I'm a newbie,so I just copied and pasted)

Hi belaenl,

Thank you for your tip. My laptop (Amilo M1473G) is now working on FC4, except for the sound.
I guess it will take some time ...

Have you installed the drivers from Realtek? I have had sound in both ubuntu hoary, and kubuntu breezy. But I had to run the installer from Realtek to get it working. These drivers are simply the source code for ALSA, with a nice install script (and possibly some tweaks) made by Realtek.
Here is the link:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&Software=True

Regarding the drivers from ATI, I simply downloaded the installer from ATI, ran it, and used fglrxconfig to generate a xorg.conf. After I had done this, I added 1280x800 to the Modes line under Screen, subsection Display in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I also added
Code:
Option "MonitorLayout" "AUTO, LVDS"
to the same file, under section Device.

Note, if you are going to install Kubuntu Breezy, you might experience a hang when the boot process is trying to load hotplug subsystem. This is because of the sound drivers that follow this install. Either press ctrl+c to bypass this, and install the drivers from Realtek. However, this might not happen after the relase, as I am running the release candiate.

Just a thought, I had some kernel panics in ubuntu hoary, but I solved this by adding the line acpi_cpufreq to the bottom of my /etc/modules file. Maybe this works in fedora as well. I have not had any panics in kubuntu breezy so far.

Mandriva

I have installed Mandriva 2006 and 2007 on my 1437g without problems.

Was unable to install Suse 10.0 and Suse 9.3.

Driver Issues:
The 2006 version used a vesa driver, so i had to download the ati installer.
The 2007 version used a desktop version of the fglrx driver, so i used the ati installer again.
Sound is good on both but there is a high level of background noise on both.

Excellent laptop apart from that, very happy with it.

Also Mandriva 2007 lets you resize an NTFS partition and create a linux partition in its place, if you want to keep the windows installation on the computer (without using a windows tool e.g. partition magic)
