install Fedora 6 on Dell Inspiron 1520 with Vista on it
Hello,
I'v a new laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium on it ,and I need to
install Fedora 6/Red Hat 9.0 linux on it.
I've shrunk the volume for Vista and created an unallocated space (not formated as I could not see non-NTFS format type).
Then I also tried booting with Red hat 9 CD.It did boot but could not recognize any hardware drivers...
It asked me to insert a driver CD , here is where I could not do anything more.
Please help.
I also tried installing Fedora 4 (though I would want FC6),but it simply hanged, getting a blue screen.
No mention of the errors or problems you encountered when trying to load FC6.
I would not bother with RH9. It is very very old, no longer supported and will not have "out of the box" support for newer hardware.
hey even i have got the same problem can i dual boot vista with linux..mostly fedora kernel 2.4...i have created an unalloctaed space of 12gb by shrinking my primary partition do i need to do something more or can i get strted off with the installation??
I've now tried FC6 too, it enters but cannot create a primary partition saying not enough space .
I had created a 40 GB unallocated space by shrinking C: drive (primary partition) in Vista.
FC6 shows one vfat partition (102 MB), two NTFS partition (10,99GB),one extended partition(with a vfat fs), and free space (40 GB).
I selected free space and tried to add partition (/,ext3) for various size values from 10,000 MB to 40,000 MB but it fails.
Without knowing exactly how the drive is partitioned one can not say for sure but it is most likely due to the fact that you already have 4 primary partitions and no free space exists in your extended partition. So even though you have unallocated space it is impossible to create additional partitions.
So to use this free space you must move the two NTFS and the extended partition up to the end of the c: drive then resize the extended partition to include the remaining unallocated space. gparted running from a liveCD will do it but be sure to backup any and all important data just in case something bad happens.
Thank you. I've been able to install FC6 with Vista.
But I've left out Customize Now option while installing. I do not have a high speed internet connection , is there a way to install the packages from the FC6 DVD at this point of time or some updates from the CD.
I would require some important packages such as KDE etc. Please guide.
