I'd burn a Debian Live CD

Then go to http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/ after booting into the live session.
To see what works.

Always md5sum Linux iso downloads for best results.

Example readout on my Dell XT2 Touchscreen.

The Live CD should be for amd64, not i386?

With 1 gig of ram? What's the point? With 4 gig of ram. 32 bit is fine also.
Example

Code:
$ inxi -S
System:    Host: harry-Latitude-XT2 Kernel: 3.17.0-linuxlite i686 (32 bit)
           Desktop: Xfce 4.11.6 Distro: Ubuntu 14.04 trusty
harry@harry-Latitude-XT2:~$ free
             total used free shared buffers cached
Mem:       5137356     818168    4319188      62148      40244     400200
-/+ buffers/cache:     377724    4759632
Swap:            0          0          0
I have 5 gig of ram and run 32bit just fine and dandy.
