You can't have tried too hard - I've certainly posted here on LQ in the last 6 months.
Ubuntu Jaunty runs (after a fashion), as does Mepis 8 and Archlinux. Most issues will be the crap video memory allocation scheme they use on that model.

Hardly very informative is it ?. Explain what you tried, what does(doesn't) happen.

Yea It was late last night when I posted this and was not very informative. Sorry about that. OK I installed Xubuntu as a dual boot with XP that is on this laptop. It will load BUT web browser won't load, games won't load, clock is off by an hour, I can not get into systems, it just will not let me do anything in apps. And it takes forever to load. The reason I tried Xubuntu is that it worked on an old desktop that I have that was loaded with Windows 98 SE, and 128MB of ram, works dam well I may add. I Goggled "Linux on a Dell Inspiron 1000" and saw things that were over 4-5-6 years old on this subject and most OS programs they were saying to use have been up dated to newer version. You are right about the last 6 mos, sorry to say I only been checking this site out for about a month or so. I just got into linux. This laptop has a Celeron prosser 256 MB of ram and it is a model no. PP07L.

Thanks
Hank

Generally for the newer Dell models I've either used Jaunty Ubuntu upwards without issue - if you use Hardy Ubuntu or something around kernel 2.6.24 you'll often need to faff around upgrading the libdrm, libMesa and sticking on the updated xf86 intel drivers - better to just use a later alpha / beta of Ubuntu - try this: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/jaunty/alpha4
