Angry Init 3 screen lock random characters/colors

Here's how i ran into the problem.

Opened a Terminal Window.
Typed SU
Entered my password.
Then typed Init 3 (also tried init 5)

Computer hangs showing funny colors on the screen.
See picture http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0Ad...eGt0Y2c0&hl=en

Rebooting had no effects on the matter.
I need to correct this in order to install my nvidia graphics drivers.

Running a fresh install of Fedora 11 64bit on a brand new Lenovo SL500 laptop. Nvidia Geforce 9300M, Intel Core2 Duo 2.0 GHz, 4GB Ram, 320 Gb HDD.

Has this ever happened to anyone? How can i solve this?

Thanks, Roman

Welcome to LQ.

Suggest : install the drivers with the package manager,
> System > Administration > 'Add / Remove Software'
... or with the commands : 1) su
2) yum install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia

To do this, you will need the rpmfusion.repo :
http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/...ble.noarch.rpm
http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfr...ble.noarch.rpm
Install the two small files with : 'su' , rpm -i rpmfusion.org*

Using the command 'yum install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia'
I got these packages installed :
Code:
[knudfl@localhost ~]$ rpm -qa --last | grep nvidia
kmod-nvidia-2.6.29.4-167.fc11.i686.PAE-185.18.14-1.fc11 tue 21 jul 2009 19:37:26 CEST
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs-185.18.14-2.fc11 tue 21 jul 2009 19:34:51 CEST
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-185.18.14-2.fc11 tue 21 jul 2009 19:34:42 CEST
akmod-nvidia-185.18.14-1.fc11 tue 21 jul 2009 19:34:41 CEST
... and ...

Worked like a charm.
