Question In the market... help

Hey guys,

I'm right now in the market of a new laptop... I've had an Apple iBook for four (4) months and frankly I'm sick 'n tired of it; it's lack of support with Linux (darn PPC) let alone makes me sad.

Anywho, is there a good laptop that's great in performance and in decent price? Something that wont be causing me headaches.... i.e. trying to get sound drivers to work, re-compiling the kernel (which I would need to do anyway), or whatever... just a laptop that wont give me much trouble with hardware. If you don't know any specific 'kind' of laptop -- is there a good brand that's normally a good rule of thumb, such as: Dell, Compaq, Toshiba, Gateway, Sony, etc?

I've been leading towards Compaq or Dell... though Compaq is with HP and I hate HP because of it's huge monopoly with retail stores. Sony just seems to make up technology that doesn't exist and it's expensive. Gateway?... uhhh any news on that? lol

Anywho hit me up.

Thanks guys! I'm really suffering and missing my slack(ware) =(

www.linux-laptop.net may be a good start point. Have a look at the model(s) you are thinking of and see what has been written about them.

Alternatively, take a Knoppix disk with you to the shop and see if you can get it to run on a demo model.
