i'm having trouble installing linux mint 17.2 on my HP laptop
I am trying to install linux mint cinnamon 17.2 on my hp 2000 laptop.
I have tried 2 different iso downloads by torrent .... the md5 check sum seems to check out at least it gives the right number. I have used them both on CD/dvd and on usb
the laptop is UEFI and also bios. Secure boot is off. I have tried both using legacy bios and uefi.
The boot up starts and gets to either "install type " and gives me a message about not being able to create a vfat partition, and tells me to go back to manual partitioning which doesn't seem that i know what I"M doing there .
I have tried to partition with gparted which I cannot apply root to any partition with but i don't know much about using it either though i have succeeded in the past several times
with this distro I have completely wiped out my 8.1 windows accidently on this laptop . I actually momentarily to install the 17.2 ver of linux mint on this computer and got no further but i did not wipe out windows. on this one i'm running win 7 and linux mint cinnamon 17.1
I certainly need help
Thanks,
Nate
I have had every ver of linux mint on several machines since linux mint cinnamon 11 I think. not sure what 11 was called .
Since it's a Windows 8 machine, did you turn off "secure boot" in the UEFI boot settings?
Also, please provide the exact wording of any error messages. One thing you might to is photograph the relevant screen(s) and attach them to your post; you can reach the dialog for doing so by clicking the "Go Advanced" button beneath the compose post windows. (In photographing monitor screens, I've found that the S--shutter priority--setting produces the best output.)
If you have already tried legacy and uefi than the only other thing left if I'm not mistaken, is to manually partition Linux Mint with the partition manager that comes with the installer.
Try running the Live g-parted cd that you have and see if the Windows 8 partition is still there.
Post for us what partitions g-parted shows.
W/O starting the installation does the Linux Mint CD boot so that you can interact with the Live distro?
If so, you can use the terminal to run:
Code:
fdisk -l (small letter L)
and that will show any partitions on that machine. Post that output if you can.
If you want to dual boot you will have to shrink your Windows 8 partition.
If you want to use bios to boot, you need to DISABLE secure boot and ENABLE csm / legacy mode.
And at least one version of UEFI on one of my machines, I have to go into the boot order and push boot USB first at every boot. It doesn't save, despite the F10 to "save" and exit.
