I changed screen configs, restarted, video unreadable

I was attempting to solve an inability to get to my Dell Monitor connected to the dock on a Dell c600 . I got great video after setting the monitor as default, now after reboot, all
i have is an obvious frequency mismatch. te video is totally unreadable. I created a new Ubuntu 7.10 CD but is there any way to recongfig the video settings from the CD?. This is my first experience in Linux, so the less file editing , the better. Many thanks in advance.

11_10 problem solved, no responses anyway. Apparently this technically sophisticated audience was bored by my "newbie" struggles
