I can't get another resolution on external screen

I have a sony vaio vgn-fw21z with ati mobility radeon 3650 video card.
I am using the latest ubuntu version 9.04
The laptop is connected to a Sasumng SyncMaster T240 through a hdmi cable.
The native resolution of the laptop is 1920x1080.
When I am using windows I am able to use a more advanced resolution of the graphics card so I can see a resolution of 1920x1200 on the samsung monitor.
The problem is that I can't do the same when I use ubuntu so I see a 1920x1080 image on the external monitor.
Any ideas how to see 1920x1200 on the external monitor?
Thank you very much!

Check your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file. It should have hundreds of lines starting "(II) RADEON(0)" or "(II) RADEONHD(0)" etc.

So you are using the fglrx drivers. All I can suggest is trying to adjust the resolution via amdcccle. If that doesn't work, you'll need to wait for someone more familiar with the fglrx drivers.
