HP Pavilion ze4400 cooling fan

I currently have Slackware 10 (upgraded from 9.1 with swaret) on my HP Pavilion ze4420us laptop. I have compiled a 2.6.7 kernel with all of the ACPI support.

When I boot up the computer, the fan isn't running; it doesn't start running until a few minutes after I login to gnome. After turning on, the fan won't turn off. The fan has 3 speeds. If I'm compiling or doing some other CPU intensive work, it quickly goes up to the highest speed. When it finishes compiling, it will return to the low speed after it cools down, but it never turns off. If I boot to Windoze, the fan will turn off when I'm not doing any CPU intensive work. I've experimented and the fan will turn off in Linux after holding it up to an A/C vent for a few seconds.

Logged into a gnome session,
Code:

cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature
reports a temperature of 51C when I'm not doing anything.

My question is does a Linux system tend to be using the CPU more than Windoze when doing little or no work? Or, does Windoze not turn the fan on unless the temperature is higher?

Thanks for anyone's input!
Josh

Do you have a cpu throttling service running? ie. cpuspeed

I have the same problem

Hello everybody,

I am a newbie to linux but I am getting better. I installed RH9 on my ze4400 and it works fine. I even managed to patch my Kernel with ACPI and when I check if all modules are loaded I get a psoitive feedback.
I read a HowTo to install ACPID and I even managed that but when I want to edit the event file with the command acpid event (Right now I don't know it by heart but it is definitely the correct command) it says something like file not found or busy. When I browse to the specific folder I see the file but on double clicking it gives me an error (it's not there) I even can't create a new file.
Well anyway, I don't realy care about the power issue and the on/off Button etc. aswell as the suspend mode. What is more important to me is the fan issue. On starting linux it starts running but it never stops. In the beginning I thought: "Who cares?!" But now it is running on my nervs.
Can anybody help me to fix this problem. Thanks in advance,

Erik

Hey,
There's another post in this laptop forum about the fan running all the time on Celeron processors. The APM (Advanced Power Management) codes have bugs in them that Windows is too lazy to worry about, hence the fan works ok under Windoze. Linux cares:)
