HP laptop: "Non-System Disk Error or Disk Error" after BIOS update

I'm using an EliteBook 8530w, with Slackware installed, for about last year and half. Recently, I came to situation that I thought may be resolved through BIOS update (I was trying VirtualBox, and it was reporting that virtualization extensions are not enabled in BIOS, and when I enabled them there, it was still reporting the same issue), so I've replaced pre-installed version of BIOS on my machine (which, if I remember it correctly, was version F.03) with the latest version currently available (version F.11). It all went fine, but after restarting the machine on update completed, I was greeted with the message as in the subject. After lots of time lost, I was able to find (trivial) cause of the issue, so here it is, in case someone else encounters the same problem: seems like HP changed BIOS so that it is requiring now at least one partition in the partition table to have "bootable" flag set. So I was able to fix the issue by simply using fdisk to set this flag for my main partition; that was first time that I'm encountering this kind of BIOS requirement, and I really had some hard time to realize that it is about it so, again - maybe this helps someone else too.

Thanks for posting this potentially useful thread. Good job!
