HP DV7-1020us a nice notebook that works very well.

I know this is long but will eventually add more and fine tune the post as time goes by. Just so happy for getting Sound, Wireless, and Video working in just a few hours I just had to post this for now. Any questions just ask. Will try my best to help.

I must say this one nice notebook once you get all hardware running. I mean all hardware works except not tried the modem. I will post the steps I did to get it working using Fedora 9.

1. Install Fedora 9. Had an issue here but believe it was a bad burn on disc #3. So I just did the default install and not bothered selecting addtional packages at this time. Set networking to DHCP for wired port. Do not plug in the network cable yet.

2. Once installed and booted into gnome, I then installed yumex using the command as root ' yum install yumex '.

3. Now plug in the network cable and once connected I started yumex. I installed addtional packages I wanted like KDE and did updates through yumex as well.

4. Next I downloaded the latest kernel at the time 2.6.27.5 from www.kernel.org . Extracted it in /usr/src and used the config file in the /boot for a start. I did not really need to make many changes at this time but will refine later. I did goto wireless networking and added the Intel 5000 module packages. This is needed for the wireless to work and not use ndiswrapper.

5. As the new kernel is compiling I added a new file to /etc/modprobe.d and it is called alsa-base. In the file I added this line.
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1
Save file.

6. Also from yumex you can install the firmware for the wireless card. ' yum install iwl5000-firmware '

7. Reboot into new kernel. You can now configure wireless networking from the network tool on the desktop taskbar. The wireless led on the notebook should start flashing red to blue till solid blue. Will flash back and forth when network data is moving.

8. For sounf you may need to open the mixer and raise the volumes on pcm and speakers. Maybe require them to be unmuted. To test run command ' play /usr/share/sounds/phone.wav '. Should hear sound if not raise volume more. Here I not sure if default fedora kernel is where sound will work but believe it will so just the one options line is all that should be needed.

9. Nvidia goes as default nvidia install docs say. Really sweet nvidia support.

10. Have fun from here.

Again one sweet notebook. so the following works once configured. Video, Sound, Web Cam using UVC module, Card Reader (includes sdcard and memory stick ), Wired Nic, Wireless Nic, USB works fine with connect Logitech 9000 webcam that uses the uvc module as well, flash drives and usb harddrives work and mount automatically same as the card reader, have yet to test modem and express card slot. Gnome and KDE work great. If you install KDE afterwards you need to install the kde pulse rpm as well for the sound in KDE to work.

One of the sweetest options of this notebook is it has room for a second sata harddrive. I just bought an external USB harddrive made by SimpleTech. Got the red one that is 320 gigs. The black one that is 500 gig will not fit because it is a thinker harddrive. Just two screws under the foil and it just opens up. Remove the bottom cover and plug the second drive in. It will stay in place because the cover has protruding plastic tabs that can keep the drive connected without hardware. This is where I installed Linux.

One thing for Vista users of this notebook and external USB Logitech 9000 Quickcam. You need to disable the HP webcam in the Hardware profile so as it will work correctly. For some reason when using apps like Microsoft Live Messenger and using video chat it will crawl video thinking the other users is the the issue when it is yours. Also I hate Vista 64bit version due to issue that it does not want to use unsigned device drivers that is not approved or actually you pay microsoft to allow a 32 or 64 bit driver to work under itself. I just basically installed Winxp, Vista32bit and Vista64bit on the main drive for now. Mostly use the vista 32bit for the most part.

Here is a hardware list.

If it hasn't got any of those proprietary HW that's bothering other laptops then it's really nice to see it works well. Maybe time to add it to the http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/

Looks like not much in proeritory hardware other than the audio but those Intel ICH* families of chipsets can be wired several different ways. Have to give the express slot a try next time going to verizion store and test one of their modems. Not going to buy will act like it. I am 110% happy with this notebook. Never thought as much of the hardware would work out of the box. Corrected above post so it fits the screen. Much better.
