How to open IBM/ Lenovo T41 to clean the heat sink

Would anyone know of any video which shows how to open this laptop? There are just too many screws at the back. I would like to clean the heat sink and not sure how to open it.

Thanks.

Hi,

did you take a look an thinkwiki.org? IBM also provides detailed maintenance guides for their Thinkpad hardware. Take a search at IBM support site and download maintenance guide, this is really helpful.

the best answer is to look at the ibm website for their instructions. there is also
a text file you can down load to tell you how step by step on their site.

to take your t41 apart first you have to take out the battery. flip it over. look for
the keyboard symbol next to the screws. remove all the screws that have the key board
symbol. flip it so it is right side up again. open the lid. GENTLY push the keyboard
toward the screen. it will move only about an 1/8 or 1/4 inch. GENTLY lift the lower
part of the keyboard up. there are ribbon cables connecting the keyboard to the mother
board. you dont need to disconnect them if you are just blowing out the dust from the
heat sink.

buy a can of air and blow out the heat sink and processor fan. you can ruin the fan
it you let the air blow it full speed reverse, so use short bursts of air on the fan.

if your t41 is like my t40 the second ram slot is located under the keyboard. this is
a good time to add more ram while you have the computer apart.

put it back together in reverse, but do it GENTLY.

Oh yeah this is important

some of the screws are different lengths. pay attention to what screw came out of what
hole.

good luck

Vanessa
