shut down the X server and issue the command xorgconfig as the root user, answer its questions and should work.

Touch pad mice are PS/2 compatible, and laptops dont much need to worry about the hsync and vsync properties

You have a file /etc/X11/xorg.conf ?
edit this file - it should contain these things (they are at different places - one more on top - the other towards the end of the file...)

in section ServerLayout:

Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
...
        InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer"
...
in Section InputDevice:

Code:
Section "InputDevice"
...
	Identifier "Mouse1"
	Driver "mouse"
	Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
	Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
...
it _should_ work - but you did not give any info on what type of touchpad it is - no info at all actually, which could help anyone help you...
