How to Dual Boot 8.04 on laptop with 9.10 on USB Ext drive.

I have the old 8.04 on my laptop and want to play with 9.10 which I have installed on a USB Ext HD. At first sight there seems to be a number of obstacles to doing this. Can anybody tell me of a work-round if one is possible?
The laptop BIOS of pre-2000 vintage only has one HD (internal) accommodated.
8.04 does not recognise Ext4 format automatically installed with 9.10 on the external HD.
8.04 uses grub but 9.10 uses grub2.
Note. I have tried to install 10.04 using Live DVD but have failed to get it to let me go to Live try-out. It always goes to its Log-in panel as though the OS is already installed, which it is not! I believe that this is not unknown but solutions seem sparse, I went to 9.10 just as an experiment and it installed perfectly. It looks very good and is capable of curing one or two niggles that I have with Heron.
