how to download and install PCLinuxOS on a wiped AcerAspire 1 MP250

Greetings,

The subject line reflects my overall question. I am not only a Newbie, I am slowbie. I am not proficient in Ditroese, therefore perhaps I should list the detailed information that I am requesting to be successful:

Ready?

1. Can I download the OS for PCLinuxOS from a Chromebook to a usb?
2. Do I need a program opener such as Unebootin?
3. If so, please explain how to deploy the symbiotic relationship.
4. My hdd on the Acer was happily Nuked, will this affect the process of installation?
5. Do I have to configure the desktop?
6. Who killed Kennedy?

Please understand that I have not come in here for you to do the work for me. I have read many articles, posts, ad infinitum. The articles, tutorials, Google etc. all seem to assume that I am savvy and have already completed the preliminary steps. I am not savvy, I love my Chromebook, when I first turned it on, I had to ask the forum how to tell if the caps lock was on. I was then directed to the simple answer for the simpleton user site and was saved from further embarrassment. I relay this information so you may get a broader perspective of the clueless user that you will may or may not be choosing to help. If you can supply direction, I would appreciate it 1000 times over. Regardless, I thank you for taking the time to read this post that rivals War and Peace in length.

Health and happiness to you and yours!

I'm sure I know the answer to #6.

Let's start by asking this. Do you want to dual boot or erase the chromeOS or do you want a unique running both at same time.

Do you realize that you can wreck this so that you won't be able to load chrome again?

It is also possible to simply run an OS like PClinuxOS from a usb flash drive just fine.

Hi,

in principle I think you should be able to write a bootable iso to a usb stick on the chromebook. However, that is more of a chromebook question than a linux one. I really don't know what userland tools come on a chromebook. Can you get a shell with the standard gnu commands?

Neither. AFAICT, the OP wants to use the chromebook to prepare installation media for an Acer laptop.

I checked the pclinuxos site and it appears that they do not provide an image that can be simply copied (eg using dd) to a usb stick. So, yes it looks like you would need to use something like unetbootin. Note that this is not the case for many distros (eg Debian).

What does "Nuked" mean? Is it recognised by the bios?

You don't *have* to configure anything. Since pclinuxos is a bit of a newby distro it will probably come with a working desktop.

Is there any particular reason that you want pc linux os?

If you have trouble making installation media using the chromebook and don't have access to another machine running a more fully fledged os, you can always purchase installation media for a very nominal price (order of 1 or 2 USD).

Barnes and Noble has great magazines that come with Linux disks too.

Greetings!

Thank you so very much for the terrific links as well as the directions. I googled if there were installation disks that I could buy for PCLinuxOS- first I was told no. Then there was a bootleg version - hmmm not so much. Installation disks- you have made my millennium. The symbiotic relationship, is what does one have to do with the other? Is Unebootin merely a vehicle to open the iso- or does it play a more important role. Since the post, I have the answer to that one. I love the resources available on this site. But with so many distros to choose from, the articles begin to blur-probably only to me, but blur is blur. I used dban on the Aspire. I should be ashamed but I am not- when the wipe was completely done, and those that will not be named, were gone. I Whipped open the window and screamed Ding Dong the Bleep is gone. My neighbors cheered. As for PCLinuxOS, It was recommended by David McCann. Believe this or not, I went through each and every ditsro available. Since I don't have a stable grasp, much of the descriptions were Sumerian to me, so I came in for suggestions and it seemed that PClinuxOS was pretty good for new users. Rok recommended Antiex(sp?) but I thought I might be biting off more than I could chew. Cascade9 had suggestions too. If you think there is a more viable distro please share. As I stated- I need the absolute easiest distro possible. I had Xandros KDE on an Asus eee pc 900. It hated me, with a passion. As for the shell, Chromebook does have it but I am terrified to use it- Not bright+manual commands= dead chromebook. I am really interested in learning Linux it, is amazing, I would like to take my time and be able to use it at the same time- This is embarrassing- what's new?- but I have not turned on the Aspire since "They who walk behind the rows" were terminated, Checking now- Yes, I do have bios- but it is still in the format that Virus #4 redid on 9-4-13. The message states, No bootable device- insert disk and press any key.Even though I used Dban is there any possibility that the hdd killer is still on there? If so, I don't think it can take on Linux- agreed?

I simply am boggled by the generosity and expertise you all possess. Running into this forum by happenstance- has been the most wonderful gift a new user could hope for.

Thank you all so very much, I have new links to peruse-
Health, happiness and the winning lotto ticket to you and yours!

(having the answer to number 6- makes you a wise man)

I remain,
The Xfool.

Bootleg? AFAIK pclinuxos should be licenced in such a way that anyone can sell install cd/dvds. First hit from my search engine was www.osdisc.com . See for example https://www.osdisc.com/products/pcli...-64bit-pc.html.

If you're unsure you can always contact pclinuxos directly to ask how they recommend you obtain an install DVD.

Evo2,

I just did the very same thing and the exact information came up. I have been looking at so many things, I probably screwed up my notes. Great, I get yo wear the dunce cap again. I have absolutely no idea why I never go o the home sites. Well, that's untrue. I don't want to talk to animated Julia, I get very frustrated, not because the information is not there- I ask the wrong questions, thereby getting the wrong info. Sorry about my nit wit post- first rule- always double check your sources. But I really do thank you for pointing out my gaff. Now I can just buy, install and hopefully leave you guys alone- so you can answer real questions from those that need real help. It occurred to me (finally) that given the info out there I should reconsider my options prior to running in here. I even have a note pasted to my laptop- uselinkb4mouth. Wish I'd have paid attention.. Mea Maxima Culpa to everyone one for wasting your (collectively) time.

Thank you for the links- I guarantee you I will use them-

With many heartfelt thanks,

I remain ,

The Xfool.

Hi Xfool,

glad to hear you are moving forward. People don't mind if you ask questions here that are already answered on the web - they'll usually only get pissed if after trying to help you, you ignore their advice. So good luck with pclinuxos and post back whenever you have any more questions.

Cheers,

Evo2.

That's because you don't have an OS on hdd. Once you install you won't get that message.

There isn't a quota system here. You can ask what you want, when you want to, when you need to.

Evo2, Eddy1 and Jefro,

Thanks for the support- nice to know you have that much brain power behind you. It is (was) hard for me to grasp the concept of no hdd- old dogs et al. Now that I have deleted Windows as a component for my base line, things are clicking along. I went to Amazon- thanks for the reminder that software is indeed out there for those bright enough to consider- and found a plethora of installation disks. All sorts of distros that don't require Unebootin , which I will never understand. Had a ball, anyone who has stock in Amazon just hit the lotto. I have printed out the instructions for each one that I ordered and highlighted the steps, so I should be be good there. Rok had sent me a link on how to install PCL (pay attention! lol- he's a nun with a ruler) and I may try that, if I do, you will see the xfool, distro in hand and cross eyed.

I want to thank each and everyone of you for all the help, especially when I just couldn't wrap my head around the process. You all rock!
