Recently I installed Vector 5.1 on my old Dell Inspiron laptop, it runs well but I don't know too much about Linux and I'm having trouble configuring the wireless card(encore electronics brand)I guess there must be a program that comes with Vector 5.1 to do this but I don't see any please help!
First of all, can you please provide us what model you have?
You can then google on the model and see if it's compatible.
I don't know this brand, but most likely you'll need to use ndiswrapper
to set it up.
Ok I'll tell you all I know hehe well...in the box and card it says "Fcc id: nhpwlg1101"(Wireless G Cardbus Adapter "ENPWI-G") the laptop is a Dell Inspiron 3800 series, and the Distro is Vector 5.1 standard
Okey I googled around and there is no linux drivers available for the wireless card.
But from some reviews, people used ndiswrapper and windows wireless card driver and it
worked fine then.So go get the windows driver for the chipset and read the howto that I linked
above.
This Vector crap is giving me way too many problems, now it doesn't even recognize my pen drive and I'm trying to run the program you recommended me for the wireless thingy problem. Is there any other distro you would recommend for a Dell Inspiron 700mhz 128mb Ram 40gb hdd?
Why not figure out how to do those things?
Any distro you'll will use will not be plug n play
as in windows. As for the ndiswrapper, you'll need to get
it from the package manager. For the usb stick, read the docs
from the vector linux site. If you *hate* vector so badly,
you can check out zenwalk or look at the different distros at http://distrowatch.com/
Iy just I get lost u know? But Um....yeah I tried a couple other distros and finally ended installing Suse 9.1 and it runs pretty well is the best distro so far very complete, beautiful graphics, and reconize almost everything except for the wireless but it did recognize the controller though(i think),Anyway's I hope this one do the job cuz' it's the best one so far.
Hey as long as the distro you use is something you like!
Like I said earlier, read the howto I posted.People have gotten
your card to work in linux under ndiswrapper, so just take your
time and read the howto and go get the card workin :-) The howto
is farly simple to understand just follow the instructions and you'll
be on your way.
Well thing is I already found out the distro I want to keep which is Suse 9.1. Thing is I don't know how to install and use the Ndiswrapper, see the only distro I manage to configure my network card using Ndiswrapper was with Puppy Linux(and I think it was cuz' it already had the program)even though it didn't work when I finished configuring the driver. I found a guide to install the Ndiswrapper using Suse 9.1 but I got lost in one of the steps cuz' it was talking about something I didn't find, but I did found a list of compatible wireless cards using Suse 9.1 and it does not requires Ndiswrapper(apparently Suse configures them automatically).
why installing an old version of suse linux? this is stup.. in my eyes. since you want a better hardware support you should install opensuse 10.2 (you can download it as cd/dvd or do a net install, all explained on the suse page) or you wait until mid of october, when opensuse 10.3 comes out...
Well...you tell me since my decision seems stupid to you, does the Suse as you say support Linkys WPC54GS or Encore Electronics ENPWI-G (that's wireless network cards) without using Ndiswrapper? because that would be fantastic!. And second IF the distro you mention seems to be so great then would it run in a Dell 700mhz 128Ram 40gb hdd?
As typical for the web there are somehow different opinions about a working card, these 2 links are representatives. but looks like it works only with ndiswrapper...
and hey guy: every linux distribution can be run on such an old dell... it is just a matter of installation. I would not install gnome or kde anyway on such a machine, but something lightweight, e.g. fvwm2, fluxbox or enlightment as windowmanagers... and 40 gigs is enough. my / partition now has ca. 11 GB and there is everything in except /home and all the data...
and by the way, your choice of suse 9.x did not seem "stupid" to me, I was just wondering since newer versions of any distribution have usually included better hardware support. for this linksys card it seems that it is not possible in any distribution to run it without ndiswrapper.... it's not a matter of suse...
Hm... ok then sorry for being rude(I'm not a guy I'm a gal ) ok...I read the links you sent me. I don't know if you know how to work with the Ndiswrapper but actually Linux is very confusing, using Suse I was told to switch to the root user but Suse asks for a password I don't know.
