How to auto start apps

Running Ubuntu netbook edition on HTC Shift, how do I auto start apps on boot ? I want the CPU clock scaling applet running every boot to save some power, it worked on the desktop setting but not sure if it still runs when switched to netbook next boot. I want to stick with desktop mode but I don't know how to force individual apps to fit to small screen like in netbook mode.

Try Preferences-->Startup Applications in Gnome. If you are using Unity, there should be a similar setting, but I don't know exactly were it would be.

I don't think that applies to system boot, but it does apply to session startup, i.e., login.
