How do I setup Wide Screen TV as external monitor?

I have Slackware 14.1 on my IBM Thinkpad Z60m and would like to plug into my TV via a vga cable to display photo's and video's. TV will display the bootstrap and MC but I get nothing when I switch to the GUI. I'm sure this has been asked before I just have not seen anything on it.

there are two issues I could imagine.

First, many notebooks have a special function key (often an Fn-combo) that cycles the display modes among "internal only", "external only" and "both together". It seems your PC uses "both together" as a default setting.

Once the video driver has loaded and taken over, it should be a matter of its own configuration. Setting up multiple monitors is a part of video configuration and depends on your desktop and video driver.

Hi Doc CPU,
I looked up the special function key combination (<Fn><F7>) after your post & gave it a try but had no results. Under my previous version of Slackware 13.37 it worked. I also tried the following;

$ xrandr --output VGA1 --primary <CR>
Warning: Output VGA1 not found: Ignoring
$

I will see if KDE setup gives me any options.

Thanks

Tried changing KDE Display and Monitor Settings to Output = VGA but had no effect.

I can plug in my desktop monitor and in KDE System Settings I select VGA as output and it works as expected. However with my Sony Bravia 40" TV inside " KDE System Settings-Display and Monitor-Size and Orientation-Primary Output" I select VGA and then have to use my special function keys <Fn><F7> that brings up a small sub menu with Sony 40" as 1st choice (Does nothing) and select" Digital Display" and I get 2/3's of my laptop screen no matter what screen resolutions I set. I use the preferred resolutions from Sony's owners manual and I set the TV to PC Input.
