How do i get my display working Inspiron 1100

Hi

Hi listed is a reply to how i get my display setup. I can only get 800 600 screen display

Important is that you check your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file
and there the Sections "Monitor" "Display" "Device" "Screen"

Where do i find this /etc/x11/xorg.conf file and what do i do with it.

Thanks

Give someone a smile

Welcome to LQ. As root, open a console session, then use the "cd" command to get into the /etc/X11 directory, like so:
Code:
cd /etc/X11
From there, you can open the xorg.conf file using whatever text editor you like. To illustrate, I like "pico"
Code:
pico xorg.conf
Scroll down to the Monitor section, where you will see which resolutions have been specified, and you can add as many new ones as you like. There are plenty of examples in other threads on this same topic already, and you can use LQ's Search function to locate them. Good luck with it

grab firmware version A31 then run xorgsetup. Be sure to read the part about DIRECT RENDERING. It took me a few days to get open gl working properly.

How do i open a console session

Hi All

First thanks for the help. I now have Bios a32. My problem now is i understand i am root but how do i open a console session so i can run XORG.CONF

Everthing i read about Linux seems to be aimed at the user who knows what he is doing. I respect the ability of those who know what they are doing but where can the likes of me and people like me read what to do at our level.

Example open a console session and CD i know cd means change directory. So CD /etc/X11 but where is the console?

Thanks for all the help i have had.

If you are running KDE, the icon to open a console sesssion looks like a computer monitor with a scallop shell in front of it. Similarly, going to System > Terminal is equivalent
