Help getting function keys on keyboard to work

Ok here is my situation, I have a Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop, I have just dual booted Linux Slackware 11 and Windows XP Pro. I was woundering if there was a way to get the function keys to work on my keyboard in Linux? (i.e. Fn+ESC to suspend, Fn+F1 to setup, Fn+F3 for battery,etc.) I would exspecially like to get my volume control keys working but have no idea of even where to start. Can anyone help with this?

Allright, I have read these pages but they have done me no good for the fact that the Fn key on this keyboard does not give an output code for me to map and the functions I am wanting to get to work require the use of this Fn key. Which for anyone with out a Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop is the key located on the bottom letf keys second key from the left between the Ctrl key and windows key. Which acording to all the programs and xev is a useless key I supose.

On my HP laptop the Fn functions are handled by the BIOS. If yours isn't then it probably requires a kernel module in order to be recognized. I noticed recently the 2.6.21 kernel series includes Dell laptop support. I don't know if it provides Fn key support.
