Headphones on a Dell 1357 ,

I have a Dell studio 1357 and using debian , and i want to use my headphones while in the office. The thing is that i have two outputs on the side for the microphone. If i plug the headphones the first then , iget sound from botth: the laptop and the headphones.

If the second input is use then , i get no sound from either the laptop nor the headphones. I have played with the gnome mixer but nothing changes

Any ideas?

I have the same problem in debian, different laptop though
AFAIK it is a bug in ALSA
The headphone doesn't mute the pc speaker.
